Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I suffer from anxiety and had been taking lisiopril 2.5 mg for hypertension which I stopped taking after doing a yoga regimens for 6 months. I monitor my BP daily (sometimes several times a day) and my reading are all WNL or low but as soon as I walk into my doctors office, I feel my body go into fight or flight mode and my blood pressure skyrockets. This morning my BP was 104/70 but in the doctors office it was 162/94. It goes back to a normal reading within 15 minutes of me leaving the office. My doctor wants to screen me for peripheral vascular disease as I have a history of smoking. I exercise 5 to 6 hours a week and eat healthy. My doctor has checked my BP monitor against his and the readings were found to be accurate on my monitor. Now I m anxious about his diagnosis today and fear that the tests that he wants to do will be inaccurate as they will consist of multiple BP readings in a clinical setting. What should I do?
Dear as mentioned by you its very common phenomenon that we call as white coat hypertension . In this situation patients w blood pressure is well within normal limit at home but it increases in hospital/office setting . You don't panic about that..your actual blood pressure is that recorded at home not in hospital and so don't need any antihypertensive . One thing I would like to emphasise that as you have mentioned you measure your blood pressure several times per day. This is not a good habit.this shows your anxiety . Monitor blood pressure maximum 3 to 4 times in a week that is sufficient . If at home setting it is found to be increased then and only then treatment is indicated . If you have anxiety disorder that can be properly diagnosed with psychiatrist you should take anti anxiety treatment . Hope this will help.you continue with your yoga..because this has been proven that life style modifications are equally important for managing blood pressure .
