Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is suffering severe anxiety and seems to sleep a lot. Dr. has diagnosed with dementia. Her mornings are slow. can shower on her own. I have to choose her clothes. She cries a lot. Can sleep the whole day and night and next morning. She seems to lock herself inside of a shell. Sometimes has outbursts of anger. However, she recognizes all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She even remembers birthdays. Remembers who visited her day before even though was asleep with eyes closed all day. Remembers things from childhood and recent things and important details. she baffles me.She is taking clonozopan 2 times a day -25 mg. She is also taking sertraline 200 mg. daily. My mother got sick after losing 2 daughters one to cancer and the other daughter s life was taken by the hands of her own husband. her husband killed her and these events happened within a year and a half of each other. I hope you can shed some light. Her doctors are baffled at her condition.
I think, she has depression rather than dementia. In depression, patients have pseudo-dementia that look like dementia. She needs antidepressant treatment. If she is not getting any effect with sertraline, then she could try another antidepressant like paroxetine or tianeptine. Rest, you can discuss with your psychiatrist. In case, you need further help, you can ask.
Thanks
