Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I sprained my right ankle 4 weeks ago. i jumped up to catch a ball and when I came down, my foot rolled inward. It swelled up all around my ankle, my foot and toes and halfway up my calf. It also bruised from right below my toes to the middle of my calf with the worst bruising just below the outside of my ankle and a little more than the foot did on the inside of my ankle. I elevated, iced and put an ace bandage on it. I saw my primary doctor 5 days after it happened and he said he thought it was a Grade III sprain. He sent me for an x-Ray which ruled out a fracture. He told me to use crutches and to stay off of it. After two weeks he put me in a boot. I have been laid up now for 4 weeks and only walk on it with the boot as necessary which hasn t been much. I have throbbing and burning pain in my outer ankle and heel and it is tender to the touch on the outer ankle and tender with pressure on the inside of my ankle. Is this normal or should I have it re-examined? How much longer should I stay off of it?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. From description , it seems you might developed muscular or ligamentous strain over ankle . Now after 4 weeks if pain is severe ,I would suggest getting this evaluated by an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. You may get the MRI of the area affected under his/her guidance. Meanwhile following measures will help with the pain
• Anti -inflammatory drugs like Tablet Motrin 1 tablet as and when required • Avoid strenuous activity . • Apply diclofenac gel on the affected area. Warm compresses will also help.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
