Suggest Treatment For An Outer Ear Infection With Radiating Pain And Swelling

Hello I was diagnosed with an outer ear infection. They prescribed me some Cortisporin ear drops. The thing is all they did was look into my ear. This ear problem has lasted over a month before I went to the doctor. It hurts into my jaw and it is swollen around the base of my ear. The drops hurt and I have an open sore inside from me scratching it with a Q-tip. I would like to know your honest opinion.

Hello,

Thank you for the query and welcome to Healthcaremagic!

In order to help you further i will need to know some more information like since when are you applying the eardrops? Did you have swelling at the time of visiting your ear doctor? Do you have any other medical condition like diabetes, hypertension? Is the jaw pain on opening or closing mouth or throughout the day?

The drops given by your doctor are good for an ear canal infection. If you have not been given any painkiller tablets then take Tab.Paracetamol as per need this will help with the jaw pain. Some jaw pain which ear infection is usual.

Regarding the swelling back of ear, it can be pus collection or a swollen lymph node due to the infection. In either cases you will need to get it examined by your local physician. If its a pus collection then it will need drainage of pus and antibiotic course and if its a lymph node only then it needs antibiotic course based on size.

Avoid the use of any sharp object or finger nails to clean ear as this is the commonest cause of ear canal injury and infection.

Hope this cleared your query, follow back for any future question.
Takecare!
