Suggest Treatment For An Inguinal Hernia

I have an inguinal hernia. Most of the time there is no pain. Occasionally there is & I can put on a hernia belt , which relieves the pain. I m 76, athletic, play tennis with it & have no problem. Would wearing the belt keep it from getting worse ? Could I possibly get by without surgery?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Inguinal hernia is protrusion of abdominal-cavity contents through the inguinal canal.
Most people avoid seeking treatment because it may not cause any symptoms.
However, it cannot be managed conservatively as it may cause complications, which could be life threatening.
Kindly seek medical attention promptly by consulting a Surgeon for clinical examination and diagnosis.
You need to undergo surgical correction called 'hernia repair'. You can plan it electively and get it done.
Further, you can prevent its occurrence on the other side by:
1. maintaining a healthy weight
2. eating a high-fiber diet
3. not smoking
4. avoiding heavy lifting
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
