I have just returned from hospital where I have been told that my eardrum has been eaten away and I will surgery. Unfortunatel I still have an infection which is now very deep in the ear canal, I have been going to the hopsital for months and things have only got worse. Any debris has always been black and recently my ear is bleeding. I now have an antibiotic eye drop - ciiloxan - and am waiting for a date for a scan. I havew to wait weeks or even chase for all my appointments, and my gp has had to write on occasions.

Hello
Thanks for posting your query
According to your symptoms, your ear drum would be having a large perforation. Culture sensitivity has to be done by taking swab from the ear. Antibiotic can be started accordingly. Get a hearing test also.
If the ear drum has a large perforation only surgery is the option.
The ear has to be not discharging for atleast 4-6 weeks before surgery.
Once a graft is placed, the communication between external and middle ear will cease and a lesser chance of infections.

Wishing all the best
