Suggest Treatment For Ammonia Smelling Urine

I have been suffering since I was a girl of about 14 with ammonia smelling Urine, I have taken 1000's of pills over the years but it still comes back, I don't want to take anymore I would prefer to take something that is not manufactured by the pharmaceutical companies if possible, and why does this keep happening to me, I am now 56 years old and I am over it....... what should I avoid or do differently, my own doctor said it had nothing to do with the fact that I have been using baby wipes every time I use the loo for many years, I asked because I thought it could be something in them causing it??. Please help as I hate this, plus I sometimes cant control my bladder and I leak..... thanks Diane

Thank you for asking on HCM

Many factors contribute to the ammonia smell in urine such as diet, dehydration and several diseases. Women may experience this condition due to menopause, infections, etc.

Other common causes of the ammonia smell in urine are diabetes, metabolic disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, medications, vitamins, and nutritional supplements.

In such cases I recommend to my patients:
- Drink at least one large glass of liquid every hour.
- Avoid foods that irritate the bladder: caffeine, alcohol, tomatoes, citrus,
and spicy foods.
- Drink cranberry juice to help fight bladder infections. If you dislike the taste of plain cranberry juice, mix it 1:1 with another juice, such as orange juice.
- Do bladder stretching excersises.
