General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Pepcid , zantac, nexium, prilosec, prevacid or protonix , would help to reduce the acid made in the stomach and decrease the reflux.
Because they do not work with the acid already present , they can take a few days for maximum effect.

They can be used with meds such as dica or tums for the first few days.

If he has severe reflux, he may need to consider testing for H pylori bacteria which can sometimes be the cause of severe symptoms.
This is a blood test.

If it is present he would need a course of 2 antibiotics plus reflux medications for 10 days to 2 weeks.

A scope , looking for ulcerations, may also be needed as well.

I hope this helps
