Suggest Treatment For A Small Painful Bump On The Labia Majora

I had a small lump under the skin of my labia about 5 days ago. It was small with no head, and no pain initially...then, a few days after, it got bigger and more painful. I couldn t move it around at all, it was hard, but I could tell that there was lots of fluid under it. It had also developed a white head. I was convinced it was an ingrown hair, so I popped it but was unable to get everything out. I then put some polisporin on it. It has been a day since I popped it and there is no pain anymore, but I can still feel a little bump. This time the head is red and it looks slightly open, probably because I tried popping it. Nothing will come out but I still feel like there is something under there even though there is no pain anymore. Any idea what this could be and if it will go away on its own?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
The fluid filled painful lump on the labia can be due to Bartholinitis.
Bartholinitis is inflammation of bartholins gland.
Bartholins glands are a pair of gland located near the vaginal opening along the labia minora.
Collection of secretions can lead to enlargement of these glands.
Superimposed infections make these glands painful.
There is possibility of furunculosis also i.e. inflammation of hair root since the area is rich in hair follicles.
The pain has relieved and fluid has escaped after you ruptured it, however, complete evacuation needs to be done followed by an antibiotic course.
I suggest you to consult your gynecologist to clinical examine the lesion, diagnose it and prescribe definitive treatment for it.
Bartholinitis is managed by deroofing the lesion so that recurrence does not occur.
Furunculosis is managed by a course of antibiotics. This will lead to re-absorption of the left secretions in the lesion.

Thanks and take care
