Suggest Treatment For A Severe Mosquito Bite On The Thigh

My daughter was bit by Mosquitos last night and has one bite on the inner thigh that has an extremely large welt around it...The welt has continued to grow throughout the day and is now the size of my closed fist. She does get smaller , similar reactions to bites but this one has me concerned because of the growing red ring. can you offer any info.?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Typically children have more serious reactions to mosquito bites than adults do. Symptoms of mosquito bites include soft bumps on the skin that may become pink, red, and itchy. Symptoms may occur up to 48 hours after the initial bite.

Symptoms of a more severe allergic reaction include:

-large area of itching
-bruises near the site of bite
-lesions
-lymphangitis
-hives (at or around the bite)
-anaphylaxis ( rare)

Treatment include:

- Cool bath without soap
-Oral antihistamines ( Benadryl or Claritin)
-Topical anti-itch lotion or benzocaine
-Epinephrine autoinjector in case of anaphylaxis

Hope this helps
Kind regards,
Dr.Mersi
