Suggest Treatment For A Chronic Ear Infection

Hello - I have been experiencing a smell and taste like chlorine for several weeks. It comes from the right side. I have a chronic ear infection on that side, am sans an eardrum in that ear. I had a sinus infection on that side as well, took a course of Cipro 250 mg tid 2 wks., took Amox 500 mg tid before and since the Cipro, as the symptoms returned. It is my guess that the Cipro was either not strong enough, or a long enough course, or both. I have a return appointment with my internist in 2 wks., so am not overly concerned. This chlorine taste, however, smell, etc is new, and I m wondering if it could be signifying something else.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, odd taste sensation can be caused by various reasons but unilateral problem with your history is most likely to be because of post nasal drip because of sinusitis. Please get a CT scan Para nasal sinuses done to know the extent of sinus involvement. A mucolytic with intra nasal steroid spay will help in dealing with this. If still the things do not resolve, further management can be planned according to CT findings. For ear discharge with perforation, surgery is the treatment of choice but any infective focus in the vicinity like sinus infection in your case, needs to be tackled first. Regards
