A high grade fever that lasts for more than 3 days or reduces and shoots back up should be investigated in detail.
-what other symptoms does he have? Nausea,
vomiting, loose stools, yellow discoloration of skin or eye.
-any shivering associated with fever, any rashes?
- did the
ultra sound show any liver or spleen enlargement?
I recommend:
- a pediatric consult
- blood tests (
complete blood count, liver and kidney function tests,
antibodies to dengue virus,
leptospirosis, peripheral smear to rule out malarial disease)
In the meantime, keep him well hydrated, a
Keep the temperature under control. Provide bland and easily digestible food. Avoid spicy and oily foods and complex carbohydrates.
If he is lethargic or drowsy or the fever cannot be controlled for more than 24 hrs, or urine output is less, take him to the ER right away.
