Suggest Treatment For UTI And Dehydration In Child
Hello doctor, My one and a half month old daughter was diagnosed with UTI and dehydration when she was 5 days old. She was put on a course of antibiotics for a period of 10 days and the repeat urine culture suggested no infection. However we were suggested to do a MCU to check for reflux. The MCU report said there was no reflux but thickened bladder wall with a small outpouching noted on the left lateral wall and posterior urethra normal. It also said that the features could represent a diverticulum. Please suggest how should we proceed futther to ensure there is least risk to her health. Regards, Mannu
Hello and welcome to HCM, Diverticulum is the cause of stasis of urine in bladder and infection in the urine collected in the diverticulum. Antibiotics will control the urinary tract infection (UTI). In order to prevent further UTI, surgical excision of the diverticulum is required. Removal of diverticulum will prevent stasis of urine in the diverticulum and thus prevent focus of infection. Consult a pediatric surgeon for further management.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
