Suggest Treatment For IBS

Yes, I have been diagnosed as having IBS. Usually my stools vary from constipation to diarrhea, however, I have had diarrhea for the past 5 days so severe that I sometimes don t make it to the bathroom without soiling my underwear. Is this also part of IBS or is something more going on?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history being diagnosed as having IBS, stools vary from constipation to diarrhea, but there is diarrhea for the last 5 days to the extent that you do not make it to the bathroom without soiling underwear, wants to know whether this is part of IBS or something more going on ...
This is IBS added on by additional intestinal infection or intolerance to something that you ate or drank.
I would advise you the following:
Since the problem is severe you need an active investigations and management as this is going to cause dehydration and may be an electrolyte imbalance.
Stool tests and tests of blood.
Imodium to control loose stools.
Antibiotic cover if an infection is found.
Also get the thyroid and sugar tests.
Find out what was consumed causing this so that you can avoid it in future.
Maintain hydration and electrolyte balance.
Colonoscopy and biopsy once this gets settled and a CT scan to complete the list of necessary investigations.
