Suggest Treatment For ADHD, Kidney Problems And Constipation In 11 Year Old

My 11 yr old granddaughter appears to have ADHD and is what school and counselors are calling it, but I am concerned it may be misdiagnosed. She has problems concentrating, is immature for her age, has behavior problems, cannot be still or follow more than a couple of directives at a time. She has severe kidney problems, constipation, sleep problems and lately is being bullied at school. She is very impulsive. They have her on meds for adhd, sleep medications and meds for her kidney and constipation. Could she have been misdiagnosed? Should she see a specialist of some type who looks at the overall problems, instead of several doctors for each problem?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Her symptoms like poor concentration, impulsivity, inability to sit still etc point more towards the diagnosis of ADHD but proper evaluation is needed to make final diagnosis. In ADHD also individuals show behavioural problems. So the symptoms suggest the diagnosis of ADHD. But a child of intellectual disability or mental retardation also presents with almost similar symptoms. So get her IQ testing done to rule out any evidence of intellectual disability. She is also having associated medical illnesses as kidney problems, constipation etc which also need proper treatment. Also report the incidence of bullying at school because this increases stress in children.

Don't get frightened with medicines. Medicines will help to reduce her symptoms and she would come out of ADHD symptoms. Still if you have more doubts please take her to a Psychiatrist for evaluation.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
