Suggest Test To Determine Dengue

On December 20, I came back from Paraguay with flu-like symptoms and was diagnosed with the flu. It has not gone completely away yet even though I have been treated with steroids and other antibiotics. I just got back from Paraguay again, and my wife (in Paraguay) was admitted to the hospital with dengue. She had the exact symptoms I had when my flu was first diagnosed (fever, pain behind the eyes, nausea, etc.). Is there a test to determine whether or not what I have/had is dengue vice the flu?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Understand your concern.

It is Viral disease caused by aedes mosquito bite.
Symptoms start three to fourteen days after infection.
Symptoms include: high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, skin rash.
Recovery generally takes less than two to seven days
In Severe case: bleeding due to low levels of blood platelets occurs.

Diagnosis is based on both symptoms and laboratory tests:
Symptoms: nausea, rash, vomiting
Low platelet count
Low WBC count
Metabolic acidosis
Positive tourniquet test: delayed capillary refilling

Laboratory tests:

1.     cell cultures: for isolation of virus
2.     nucleic acid detection by PCR: for early stage of disease,
3.     viral antigen detection: NS1antigen, also used in early stage of
disease, 85-90% sensitive
4.     specific antibodies: Used in later stage of disease
Ig M: primary infection
Ig G: in reinfection.

Hope this may help you.
Best regards
