Suggest Remedy For Upper Abdominal Pain In Patients With A Past History Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)

Upper abdominal pain hours after eating nuts. Pain is located on the right upper quadrant of my abdomen and lasts for hours feels constricting and hard to breathe. Pain also radiates to the back. When pressure is applied to the area it increases pain. Past history of NEC as an infant and 1/3 of bowel was removed. Current medications are proton pump inhibitor 3x a day. There are no gallstones present but a nuclear test 4 years ago showed constriction in the gallbladder. What should I do?

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Abdominal pain over right side upper quadrant could have many causes which are likely to be hepato-billiary related or radiating pain of stomach or duodenitis but should be evaluated further by various relevant tests.

It is very unlikely to be related to necrotizing enterocolotis for which you had been operated in childhood.

You should undergo routine blood investigations and liver function tests, urinalysis, abdominal ultrasound and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to detect the underlying cause.

Treatment is mainly depend on the cause but she may take symptommatic treatment meanwhile.

Continue with antacids like h2 blockers (ranitidine) or proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole or rabeprazole) will help to reduce excess acid production in stomach.

You can also take digene gel or liquid or ulcero-protective agents like sucralfate to reduce the burning sensation.

Apart from medications she should eat plain foods like boiled rice and green leafy vegetables without adding spices or oil. Avoid oily, spicy and fast food

Consult gastroenterologist for detailed medical history and clinical examination to diagnose the cause.

Thanks and Regards,
