Suggest Remedy For Throbbing Ear Pain

Hello, I am a 33 year old female (5'8", 160 lbs, no health problems, non-smoker). I've been having a dull, throbbing pain behind my left ear for over 5 weeks now. At first it was only when I would lay down and for the first couple hours of the day (it would go away as the day went on) but now it is pretty much constant. I went to my dr. a couple weeks ago and he thought it might be muscular (although it doesn't get any worse with movement and there is no swelling) so he gave me naproxen (sp) and a muscle relaxer, neither of which has helped. No swelling, lymph nodes aren't swolen, just the constant achey feeling behind the ear and kind of down into the neck.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Causes of earache are wax granuloma, otitis externa, acute otitis media, tumors, mastoiditis. To rule out these causes, an otoscopic examination of ear is needed.

Causes of referred earache involves dental caries, tongue lesions, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, lesions in pharynx, base of tongue, temperomandibular joint dysfunction.

To rule out any of these causes, an examination of oral cavity and throat should be performed. If the cause is not detected then go for MRI brain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manu Wilfred
