Suggest Remedy For Sunburns

My son s head got sunburnt 2 days ago while on the beach, even after applying sunscreen. Today the sides of his head and race, around the temple area, started swelling. He s says it doesn t hurt, but it has me concerned. Should I take him to the hospital? If not, what can I do to help the swelling go down? I ve been applying a cold compress, aloe with lidocaine, and giving him ibuprofen. Any suggestions? His pupils are even and responsive, he s acting normal, but says his hair hurts.

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

Acute sunburn can be very painful and discomforting.

If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to take a short course of an oral steroids. Oral steroids are rapidly acting and immediately bring down the sweeling and discomfort.

In addition to that you could use topical moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate cream, twice daily for a week.

An OTC pain killer/anti-inflammatory e.g ibuprofen or aspirin can be taken twice or thrice daily to relieve the pain and discomfort.

Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen, throughout the day.
