I recently went on holiday to Cuba and while I was there I got fairly badly sun burnt. After the first few days the sunburn on my shoulders developed into a thick crust. My girl friend exfoliated this gently with a sponge while I was in the shower and most of the crust peeled away. It left behind lighter patches of skin almost pink in colour which have still remained 2 months after this had happend . I have spoken with my doctor in the past in regards to skin cancer as I was always in the sun when I was a child on holiday. And he told me that it was unlikely that I would develop it due to my strong medataranian heritage and that I was fairly dark skinned anyway. I was using factor 30 when this happend and I really badly burnt after which I went up to a 50 and then down to a 10 after I.had a decent tan and I was fine. Should I be worried about the discoloured skin on my shoulers?.its not painful.
Hello, Thank you for posting on HCM. Acute sun burns are sometimes frightening but nothing to worry as its pretty easy to manage. Generally, I advise short course of prednisolone along with local application of mometasone cream and soothing calamine lotion twice a day. Antihistaminics and antioxidant tablets can additionally be added. Use high SPF broad spectrum sunscreen everytime before going out in sun. Cold sponging will definitely help. Hope this will take care of your issue. Wish you best of health. Thank you Dr Hardik Pitroda M.D Dermatology
