Suggest Remedy For Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss

My father flew to Hong Kong and a few days after he arrived he called me and told me that he cannot hear anything in one ear. He went to the doctor s there and a few days later (today) they told him that it s SSHL. He called me earlier and said that they told him to seek immediate help within two weeks, but I am reading that it should be asap. I trust the specialist here in the U.S. more and he also doesn t have insurance in Hong Kong. I was wondering if you think he should just seek treatment there as this is very time-sensitive or does he have time to get back to the U.S. in a few days before treatment. I also wanted to ask if you think the Airplane cabin pressure will do further damage to SSHL. Thanks

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your father have sudden sensorineural hearing loss which could be due to Otosclerosis meniere's disease , autoimmune inner ear disease , very loud noise , acoustic neuroma , physical head injury. Chances of hearing back from ear after sensorineural hearing loss are very less. Airplane pressure will build little more pressure. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination. You should get it examined immediately to prevent further exaggeration of symptoms. Doctor may order CT scan , blood test , examination with otoscope . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin or penicillin ) , anti inflammatory medications. Doctor can recommend you surgery. You should use hearing aid as that is the best treatment possible.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
