I had a tooth extracted from my upper left jaw two months ago. I took clindamycin as preventitive. I started with a horrible smell in my nose every time I bent over. I also had some sinus pain. My dentist suggested it was most likely a sinus infection, but cleaned out the site and gave me more clindamycin. It cleared up. Then 6 weeks later, I began having very severe shooting pain in my upper jaw. It was and it still intermittant throughout the day, but I can't say what sets it off...sometimes eating or heat, other times it just starts. The dentist said that it is infected. He gave me a larger dose of clindamycin. This is day 6 on that antibiotic. On day 4, I had less pain, then it returned with a vengance, radiating into my upper and lower jaw, and I am going back in tomorrow. I am concerned that I may have something very serious and my dentist in young and somewhat inexperienced. I am 64, by the way. What should he be doing at this point? Blood tests? Referral to a specialist? More of the same meds or something different ?( I am allergic to penicillin).
