Suggest Remedy For Severe Acid Reflux While On Levothyroxine

I am taking levothyroxine, and I am bad acid reflux with gas. I am taking Prilosec OTC for now since I stopped Aciphex gave me side effects. I also take Hydrocholorothiazide and Klor Con since my potassium level was slightly low on the last test.My doctor wants to change my acid medication, what would be safe since I was diagnosed with Hepatitis 10 years ago but my liver enzyme had been normal for years and no sin of the virus as of 6 mos. ago. I do not drink or smoke.

What kind of side effects did you have with Aciphex? Aciphex and Prilosec are the same group of drugs and have the same profile of effects. You could try another drug in this group. It is called Pantoprazole and it works very well for some patients.
Here are few things you should do to decrease the reflux:
1. Use 2 or 3 pillows at your head end while you sleep at night to elevate your head above your abdomen
2. Do not eat until your stomach is full while having meals. Keep it just a bit below full stomach.
3. Avoid red meats, fatty foods, fried foods, spicy foods, cheese and oily foods.
4. Goto bed only one full hour after having meals.
5. Take your acid medication 30 minutes before your meals for its maximum effect.
6. Eat healthy. Include more fresh vegetables and fruits but avoid the more acidic ones like lemon. Bananas are very rich in pottassium.
7. You can also ask your doctor for prokinetic drugs like metoclopromide.
8. Has your doctor considered giving you anti H.pylori treatment? Just ask his opinion on that too.
9. Monitor your TSH levels every month and let your doctor make dose adjustments for your Levothyroxine as necessary.
