Suggest Remedy For Rash After Getting A Tattoo

I got some road rash on my new tattoo 6 days ago. It looks like the top layer of skin is peeled but the skin underneath still has the tattoo on so I m guessing it s a 2nd degree road rash? I ve been putting neosporin and wrapping it for 6 days now. In the morning when I change dressing I still see a little bit of yellow on dressing. When I wash it the skin looks pale but when I let it air dry, the surface looks dry and dark yellowish but no fluids which worries me. The wound is on my bicep area and it feels really stiff and kinda painful when I extend and fold my arm. Is it healing normally? It s the first week and it s really discomforting. I ve never had this before so I m just taking it one day at a time.

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I will keep a possibility of Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) to tattoo ink, as the reason behind rashes and oozing.
Yellow discharge on dressing suggests that there is a secondary bacterial infection and some oozing.
I was the treating doctor I would have started you on an empirical course of oral antibiotic to help resolve secondary bacterial infection.
My choice of an empirical oral antibiotic would have been either flucloxacillin Or cephalexin, for a week.
You may stop Neosporin because it can itself cause allergy. Neosporin is a well known topical sensitizer.
Specific treatment for Allergic Contact Dermatitis, would include topical potent steroid+antibiotic combination creams (e.g clobetasol propionate+fusidic acid cream), to be applied twice daily for a week or 10 days. Topical steroids are prescription products.
An OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10 mg once daily would provide you symptomatic relief from itching.
I would suggest that you visit a dermatologist in your region for the needful.
Your treating dermatologist might also start you on a short course of an oral steroids if deemed necessary, to take faster control of the allergic contact dermatitis.

Take care
