Suggest Remedy For Post Nasal Drip And Cough

Hi. I have been having post nasal drip and a cough that comes from the tickle in my throat. I have been taking Mucinex DM for about a month along with allergy medication (OTC). It started out a few months ago with me feeling like I had to clear my throat and then the cough developed. Can you suggest anything else I can do to get rid of this cough? I have a history of asthma (been dormant for years) and allergies (never had this type of cough). I had a head cold and the clearing of my throat turned into a cough. I cough so hard sometimes that it hurts around my sternum. Thanks. Annette Foley

Thanks for the query..

As per your complain post nasal drip and cough for which you are taking Mucinex DM and allergy medicines along with having a history of Asthma and allergy seems to be most probably due to allergic reaction..
It can also be due to sinus infection that is one of the most common cause for post nasal drip..

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like sputum culture, PNS view x ray of sinuses,chest x ray and post nasal drip can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly...

You can be advised a course of antibiotics, decongestant like Phenylephrine, mucolytics like Ambroxol, cough suppressant like dextromethorphan, cough expectorant like Gueifenesin..
Do warm saline gargles and steam inhalations..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
Avoid exposure to dust and pollutants..
