my husband has been recently taking 12.5 mg HCTZ but had ran out of the Rx like 2 weeks ago and now is experiencing nausea could this be causing his nausea and why he currently takes Prilosec 20 mg nightly and had not experienced this only when he was first put on the hctz at a walk in clinic should he have a pcp today he too his b/p it was 146/87 while taking the hctz it was never this high it usually ran 130-140 over 70-80
Hello, Welcome to HCM . Appreciate your concern for your husband. HTCZ is a diuretic and lowers BP by pushing out water and salt through the kidneys. Prilosec ( Omeperazole) is a proton pump inhibitor which decreases acid production in the stomach. It is used in people who have abdominal pain and nausea due to acid related stomach and duodenal inflammation. If he still has nausea, it would be good to do a liver function tests to ensure that there is no liver inflammation. An antacid like Gaviscon would help. Another option would be to use a prokinetic medicine like domperidone which will decrease the nausea. He can also be restarted on HCTZ as it was controlling his BP well. Take care Dr. Noble Zachariah
