I am trying to lower my TSH level taking Levothyroxin I am a 58 year old woman who has had this problem for over 2 years and cannot take high doses of the drug because it makes me feel wierd so I am increasing slowly and now take 38 microgrammes followed by 3 days on 25 mg then repeat. My last reading was 8.8 but just got results today after 8 weeks and TSH is 14. I am seeing my Doctor but will my result get lower eventually and should I be worrying. Many thanks Lynn
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM! I have gone carefully through your concern. The dose you have been taking is low, it should be raised ( at least 50 mcg/ daily). You shouldn' t get worried about TSH 14 because it can be corrected for one month with increasing the dose. The side effects of high TSH are mainly long term. It may cause high lipid level, worsen atherosclerosis but doesn't cause acute damages. So it is important not to stay for many years with high TSH. Monthly mild elevations are not to worry about. Hope the information will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
