Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband is 67 years old and will have an ablation in a few days to make his heart totally pacemaker dependent. He is in chronic a-fib and has congestive heart failure. Does having this procedure make his heart weaker? Could he live 20 more years after this procedure or will it shorten his life span?
Hi welcome to HCM. Ablation procedures with pacemaker implantation are not associated with any weakening of the heart musculature.Infact these procedures can help to prevent heart from going into failure secondary to atrial fibrillation long standing.B onut uncontrolled congestive heart failure has high mortality rate.Drugs like inotropes with adequate control of blood pressure and salt restricted diet can help to prolong life in presence of cardiac pacemaker. This period can be well above 8-12 years on an average.Consult your cardiologist for further help. Thank you
