Suggest Remedy For Head Injury

We were at a water splash pad today this afternoon, and my 7 year old son slipped and bumped the lower back of his head. He got a big bump(alarmingly big) and I kept applying ice to the area. It went down somewhat, but not enough to appease my concern. We are still putting ice, and it has gone down some, but I feel it isn't going down enough. Should I take him to the ER?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The bump or swelling at head injury site is normal. You should worry only if he becomes

: confused
: develop vomiting
: fits
: bleed through nose/ear/throat
: progressive decrease in consciousness
: progressive headache not responding to painkillers

As presence of any of above sign suggests dangerous injury which needs urgent medical attention. The doctor advises CT head in such case, to rule out fracture or brain bleed. Fracture is usually managed conservatively, while brain bleed may require surgical evacuation.

If your son remains conscious, oriented, active, eats properly and responds well, then do not worry. For bump, you are already applying ice which is very good. You can also follow few tips

:Keep his head at higher level than chest to reduce swelling.
:Give him painkiller syrup like Ibuprofen which also decrease swelling, after proper prescription.

Hope it will help him. Still no relief, you can consult doctor.

Thanks. Take care.
