Hello. Thank you writing to us at healthcaremagic

Herpes genitalis can vary in severity.
It can be a severe episode of painful blisters that can make even urination and defecation difficult Or else it can be a mild episode and therefore even go unnoticed.
Moreover, the frequency and severity of episodes decreases over time. In your case since you have had it for more than 20 years the episodes would be far and few and may go unnoticed.
The chances of passing the infection on to sexual partners is more during active episodes of herpetic sores, therefore sexual contact should be strictly avoided during these episodes.
Nevertheless, herpes can still be passed on to the uninfected even during the asymptomatic stages i.e when there is no evidence of sores because the virus is being shed asymptomatically from time to time.
Regular and proper use of condom reduces the chances of transmission of infection.
