Suggest Remedy For Ear Pain Caused By Infection

I think I have an ear infection. My nurse practitioner prescribed azithromycin (Z-PAK) because i had flu like symptoms and pressure on my ears she thought either a different strand of flu or a sinus infection. I did have my flu shot but I am a Nursing Student so I have clinicals in hospitals. I looked up the drug and found that it was only used for ear infections in children. Should I see a doctor to prescribe a different antibiotic or should I try using some ear drops to ease the pain?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain the first thing that I would like to tell you is that it is not true that Azithromycin is given only to kids and it can be very well given to adults too..
Flu like symptoms and pressure in ears seems to be inter-related and can be due to infection in throat leading to infection in ears as ears and throat are inter-connected via eustachian tube..
I would however suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and otoscopic examination of ears along with throat swab culture can be diagnostic..
In case of ear infection antibiotics like Augmentin, Azithromycin and Levofloxacin etc can be advised..
Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen can be given..
Antibiotic ear drops like Genatmycin ear drops can be instilled in ears..
Decongestants oral as well as nasal can be taken..

Hope this information helps.

Thanks and regards.
