hi....my wife is in labour at the moment.she has passed her due date too....they induced her twice but still no seviour contaction pains........they say the cervix opening is 2cm only......what other suggestions can you give to speedup the delivery?please help!!!
I would have appreciated if you had mentioned her exact period of gestation. Your query just mentions that she is overdue.
Usual physiological duration of pregnancy is 40 weeks from the missed period. However, delivery upto 41 weeks is acceptable and carries much less risk, though more than the one at 40 weeks. After 41 weeks, the risk to the baby and also to the mother goes on increasing. At 42 weeks, the risk to the baby's life is very high.
If your wife is still under 41 weeks, her Obstetrician may try few more attempts of induction of labour by medicines; mostly Oxytocin products. However, if it fails or shows signs of foetal distress, her delivery would be immediately instituted by Caesarean section.
If nothing works till the completion of 41 weeks, it would be advisable to deliver her by Cesarean section.
I hope this clarifies your doubts.
