Hi, I think your son has something called as Hyperactive Airway Disease. This is a condition where in any allergen which enters the system makes him cough. The allergen causes the airway to become narrow and then leads to difficulty in breathing and then cough.
Well, you need to keep his nose and mouth covered by a mask. This would reduce the fresh bouts of cough. Secondly , according to me he should be started on inhalers which are easy to administer and effective as well.
You need to keep a close watch on what food causes immediate cough, NAD probably avoid it. Chocolates , one of the favorites of kids should be avoided. Pastries, jams to be avoided as well.
For further management and inhalers, you have to get back to your doctor.
