Suggest Remedy For Constipation Due To Morphine Medicine

My 84 year old mother was recently prescribed 15 mg of morphine...1 tablet twice a day. Her doctor told her she may get constipated and she developed constipation. Now, she believes she has an external hemorrhoid. She is also nauseous. How can I help her? What is the best otc medication I can get her today?

I can understand your concern. Morphine is an opioid drug and the drug is known to cause constipation as side effect. She is 84 years old and at this age the chances of constipation are higher than normal population. The constipation caused by morphine can occur in severity that it may cause haemorrhoids or some times fissures. Stool softeners like Liquid paraffin can help to reduce the constipation. Please consult her doctor and ask about appropriate doses of the drug. Give her high fibre diet and plenty of fluids. This will help to form roughage and her constipation will decrease. Please consult her doctor if her symptoms worsen.
