The cause of constipation needs to be evaluated. The bowel movements are responsible for moving the food down through the gastrointestinal tract, as it gets digested, and eventually leads to the expulsion of stool. When there is stagnation due to some reason, constipation occurs. Formation of bulk, gets the stool going. The primary mode of action of laxopeg (polyethylene glycol) is through the osmotic effect by absorbing more water into the intestines and forming bulk. This bulk is essential. In normal circumstances, unabsorbed dietary fibres form this bulk. So the permanent solution would be to give plenty of fibre rich food stuff like green leafy vegetables, unless some other underlying problem is diagnosed.
