hello Dr. We are looking for suggestion in Epileptic case. Patient is 58 yrs old female. She started showing Epileptic symptoms in 1982. earlier she used to become unconscious for hours. Tegritoll 600 mg was suggested everyday. Now she becomes unconcious for a minute. This happens almost everyday. Do we have a permanent cure for this? Where should we take her for the treatment?

Neurologist 's  Response
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Epilepsy often is a lifelong disease and it is well possible that the patient will always need treatment. However if treatment with Tegretol doesn't achieve satisfactory results there are other therapeutical options, there are many antiepileptic drugs which could achieve better control of her seizures.
However to choose among other alternatives it is necessary to study the seizure type and findings on EEG. Also an MRI of the brain is recommended in patients with epilepsy.
The drug choice is done based on seizure type, EEG findings, other medical conditions and drugs side effects consideration, so I suggest you contact a neurologist to consider these factors. Also regular contact with neurologist will be needed for later follow-ups to evaluate the efficacy of the therapy and possible changes.

I hope to have been of help.
