Well hydrocodone and valium are a problem in COPD because they lower your breathing. Increasing the narcotics makes this more risky. Valium is not a paiin medication and its effects on calming and/or muscle relaxation can be also produced by drugs that are far less risky. Stopping valium suddenly can also be fatal and needs to be done under supervision.
People who like narcotics for pain are unlikely to like other drugs for pain as much, so this gets to be quite a difficult situation. It is classically one for which medical marijuana is prescribed and illegal marijuana is a bad alternative. Medical marijuana in the context of COPD and home oxygen is itself potentially very very dangerous, so, it is a difficult problem and not one that can be really addressed without actualy being there.
