Curative treatment for liver cancer (hepatocellular cancer) which is confined to the liver is surgical resection.
Before surgery the treating doctors will confirm that the tumor is confined to the liver by staging investigations including CT scans of chest abdomen and pelvis, a bone scan and other investigations if the patient has symptoms.
What is his hepatitis B and C status and serum Alpha fetoprotein levels. I am sure by now the treating doctors must have had them done. If there is underlying chronic liver disease your treating doctor will calculate what is known as Child Pugh score for the patient.
Lastly before surgery Functional Liver Remnant (FLC) will be calculated that is how much liver will functionally remain after surgery. This FLC is varies from 35 to 45% depending upon child pugh score.
You can discuss this with your treating doctor. I hope it is of help.
