I understand your concerns. Most of the throat infections with fever are caused by viruses which actually do not need any antibiotics at all. These are mostly self limiting illnesses in children and get improved with just symptomatic treatment over a period of 1 week. Sometimes, if they are associated with congestion of throat, enlarged lymph nodes, high grade fever, enlarged and inflamed tonsils, the bacterial infections are the cause. Streptococcus is the most common reason. It needs to be confirmed by a pediatrician, throat swab culture and a complete course of penicillins or other sensitive antibiotics. I usually recommend single injection of Benzathine penicillin, or 10 days penicillin v oral or 5 day course of Azithromycin. Hopefully this will be helpful.
