Suggest Medication For Persistent Elevation In BP Levels And Hypertension

I am 70 years old male, having hypertension for the past 5 years. the present pressure is 170 /80. I am from India. I am not over weight (BMI=24), not diabetic, and not having any other health problems. I am taking a balanced, low sodium diet, with varieties of fruits and vegetables rich in Potassium. initially i took Metlolar-25mg, once daily for 3 years and based on the cardiologist advise, I changed to Telmisartan-40mg once daily. The BP is not coming down. Shall i go for higher dose, or change to some other more effective and safe, hypertension drug?

hello there .i have gone through your history and its nice to hear that you are maintaining a healthy and balanced diet and is relatively free of diseases in an elderly age.
telmisartan is a relatively safe drug for hypertension and effective in most cases too.unfortunately in your case, since telmisartan 40mg is not effective,i would recommend you to start a combination therapy with hydrochlorthiazide alongside telmisartan and upping the dosage to 60mg twice daily along with 6.25mg hydrochlorthiazide twice daily.

usually these are available as a single tablet. These combination therapy is pretty effective for resistant hypertension of your age group, though mild dizziness and gaseous discomfort may occur when you are starting the tablet.
Usually such low doses wont cause any side effects and if you feel any discomfort please visit your cardiologist.

Hope i have answered your query promptly and hoping you will achieve a healthy target bp soon with the above regimen
