Suggest Medication For Cold And Double Ear Infection

Hello, my 10 year old son just came back from a doctor visit. He has been off and on sick with a cold since early December. 2 weeks ago he was diagnosed with a double ear infection. Completed a treatment of amoxicillin as this past Friday. His coughing remained so I brought him in today. Doctor was a little unsure but said based on his month long cough and listening to his breathing, oxygen levels at 96. She would have to say he has pneumonia. Prescribed breathing treatments and Z pack. My question is... if he never had a fever, or serious pneumonia symptoms wouldn t it be walking pneumonia? Isn t that viral? So how would antibiotics help with viral pneumonia??? I am just hesitant to start him on another antibiotic. If the breathing treatments alone will help him clear out and get back to normal.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of cold and double ear infection which is due to eustachian tube dysfunction as it connects the two organs and leads to creation of negative pressure inside ears. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to take few preventive measures and along with that you should take antiallergic medication such as Levocetirizine and proper course of antibiotic such as Amoxicillin to suppress infection. Avoid intake of cold beverages and spicy, sharp and oily food. Visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. You should go for otoscopic examination and get audiometry testing as well and start treatment after proper diagnosis. You should not prick ear with any sharp object. Put Otogesic ear drops.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
