I found a lump in my right breast. I have felt pain in my right breast for about 2 weeks, shows some redness. I went to doctor, they found lump as well. My maternal grandmother died of breast cancer. I am scared. The next appointment I can get for scan/mammogram isnt until end of Sept. What are your thoughts?

Welcome to Health care magic.

1. Once the lump is identified in the breast - first thing is to get it examined as you did. Once confirmed presence of lump an ultrasound scan is indicated depending on the age / severity mammogram is indicated.
2.Ultrasound helps in identifying the nature of the lump - ( solid, cystic, ductal dilatation, fat lobule) its source and where the lump is extending.
3.Mamogram will detects the lumps, percentage of glandular tissue and micro calcifications - is a feature of malignancy , generally not seen well on ultrasound.
4.After that next step is ultrasound guided FNAC - fine needle aspiration cytology / BIOPSY.
5.Depending on the histology - pathology results further steps are taken - weather lumpectomy or total / sub total mastectomy.

Hope it helps you. Wish you a good health.
