My father is 75 yaears old and has been diagnoed with lung cancer that has spread to the bone. He has a history of heart trouble over the past 25 years and has had two strokes during that time. He was told that there is no cure but Chemo would prolong his life. What is his life expectancy?
Hi Your father is suffering from stage 4 lung cancer. Since he is 75 year old and history of heart trouble i would suggest oral chemotherapy for him at this stage to improve his quality of life. Cure is not an option during this stage and he will not tolerate injectable chemotherapy. If EGFR and ALK mutation test is positive in his biopsy sample then oral chemotherapy tablets erlotinib and crizotinib will work for him to prolong his life for 3 to 4 months. Average life span at stage 4 with chemotherapy varies from 6 to 9 months. If he refuses chemotherapy totally then basic aim of treatment should only be basic supportive care. Regards DR De
