Suggest Exercises To Avoid Muscular Atrophy

My mom just broke her femur just below the trachanter (within the last 24 hours). She had surgery and had a titanium rod and pins placed. She is 58 years old, about 125lbs, and significant respiratory history - severe asthma, COPD, she has gone in the hospital 8 times for respiratory failure, 5 times needed to be intubated, and also has osteoperosis (caused by being on Prednisone for many years - rarely gets below a 10mg doasge or else goes into an asthma flare.) Each time she has gone into the hospital for her respiratory failure, she loses leg muscle and has to do physical therapy. She actually just finished 6 weeks of PT about 2 weeks ago. Because of her health problems, I know she will take a longer recovery time. What exercises can she possibly start now to reduce muscular atrophy? And is there anything that we can do to help speed up recovery?
