Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns. As per your complain the white chunks over the tonsils seems to be tonsil stones which are formed by calcification of food debris and dirt that get accumulated over the tonsils. If they are loosely attached they can get dislodged while coughing or forceful spitting.

They are not harmful or cause any severe illness but can cause bad breath and recurrent inflammation of the tonsils. If they are not causing any severe problem you need not to worry and if they are found over tonsils you can get them removed manually using a q-tip or consult an otolaryngologist who can remove it for you.

Tonsillectomy is advised only if the tonsil stones cause severe bad breath and persistent swelling of tonsils. To reduce the occurrence of stones you can gargle with warm saline water 2 to 3 times a day. Always gargle with water after eating anything and limit the intake of milk products as they are high in calcium and increase the formation of stones.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
