Hello,
It is true that use of Carbamazepine during pregnancy can cause harm to the fetus and this includes developmental neurological abnormalities, spina bifida, cardiovascular malformations, craniofacial defects and hypospadias etc. The effects are more with combination therapy. Therefore, if the drug is definitely needed to be used, it is better used as monotherapy since single drug use has been shown to cause less side effects. Regular evaluation, proper pre-pregnancy planning and prenatal vitamins help a lot. Please see a specialist in high risk pregnancy for further management. Hope this helps.
