Suggest Cause For Swollen Tonsils With Bumps In Tounge

Hello doctors, I am a 37 yr old female. I had unprotected oral and vaginal sex and 2 days later woke up with swollen tonsils. My symptoms are just headache, severe sore throat and swollen tonsils. The area is red, but there are no white bumps or coating on my tongue or throat. I had a low grade fever with body aches as well. Could this be exposure to a std? As a child I frequently had tonsillitis, and as an adult occasionally get it as well. I was around a person who was sneezing and runny nose the same day so I am unsure if it is germs from exposure to a sick person or a std. Please help thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Patient,to me at this point that doesnt sound much like an std, more likely it is just a infection of the upper airways from a virus or bacteria. Tonsillitis doesn't always come with white spots on the tonsils. However, if this doesnt get better within a week and also other symptom appear like ulcers, swollen lymphnodes or genital symptoms i recommend seeing your general practitioner and or gynacologist to test for std's like chlamydia and gonorrhea first. Other blood tests for hiv or siphyllis can be done after 3-4 weeks after contact (diagnostik window), exept there is one early hiv test (p24 antigen) that responds already after 2 weeks. So even though an std is more unlikely at this point, if any symptoms persist you can have the tests be done just to be on the safe side for potential early treatment. All the best to you!
