Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had diarreha for about a week and a half. Called my doctor and she told me to try pepto or immodium ad. That didn't help so she called me in and she did stool, blood samples and an xray. She said I have white bloods cells in my stool and that it was bacteria. She put me on an antibotic and I still don't feel good and I can't eat anything but yogurt, toast and crackers. I lost weight and this is really starting to scare me. What should I do?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Since you have been given the symptomatic treatment and antibiotic too but without any results for diarrhoea I would suggest you the following: Get the stool sample checked again for three consecutive days. Get the blood sample checked for diabetes, thyroid and liver functions. CT scan of the abdomen to see if there is any focus of infection. Colonoscopy helps sometimes to pin-point the cause. Once diagnosed to get any specific reason and you will be fine. If all the tests are normal then this may be IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome and get treated accordingly, control of stress and anxiety being one of the most important factors. Watch for the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the problems and stop these altogether.
