Suggest Alternate Medication For Aliskiren

Hello, I am concerned about the blood pressure medication rasilez (aliskiren) that I am currently taking. I used to take 150mg of aliskiren, 5mg of Norvasc and 25mg of hydrochlorothiazide. My GP couldn t figure out one that would lower my pressure. Aliskiren because I am Insulin resistant, Norvasc because it took care of my headache and hydrochlorothiazide for the edema caused by the Norvasc. I am now only taking aliskiren because internal med felt I was taking too much meds for my age (49). BP is hereditary and most members pass away about mid to late 50 s in my paternal side. So I want to come off the aliskiren and go on something else that would protect my kidneys and protect me from possible future strokes. I am presently suffering from bowel disturbances with the aliskiren and my doctor refused to take me off of it because my bp is good. Unfortunately I felt really good with the Norvasc but couldn t walk far with swollen legs and feet. Is there something else that would both protect my kidneys and relieve my headaches and not cause too much swelling?

Hello. By your description, I understand that you are currently only on aliskiren and your blood pressure control is good.
I would have suggested my patient to go off aliskiren if the bowel disturbances are intolerable. I would have put him on an alternative antihypertensive medication like telmisartan 40mg OD or ramipril 2.5mg OD. Both these medications would take care of your kidneys as Aliskiren.
I would also suggest regular blood pressure measurement and lifestyle modifications like regular exercise, strict diet for long term control of hypertension.
Hope this helps. Thank you.
