Suggest A Treatment For Symptoms Of Schizophrenia

My mom has been having dreams since my brother dies last August. She keeps dreaming about people like my dad, my brother and others in the family who have passed come during the night and she gets up in the morning making coffee and food for everyone. She says she hears them upstairs but no one ever comes down to eat or visit so she says she must have dreamed it all. She has dreamed about me and my husband come to see her or her grandchildren but there is no one there. Most of the time he decides she was just dreaming. It has been happening quite frequent and is really beginning to scare me. She is 87 years old and living by herself since my brother died. He was living with here at the time. What should we do if anything or is this just old age? Mylinda C

Hi Mylinda,

I am sorry for the loss of your brother and I can understand your concern about your mother. Death of your brother has given your mother deep shock and it has been really hard for her to move on especially because of her old age. She is having hard time accepting that your brother is no more and feels comfort in the thoughts that people are still around her.

It is essential for her good health to make her realize the events that have happened and however hard the acceptance is, she will have to accept it. The time immediately after her realization will be too hard on her and you, but she will get better as time will pass.

I would advise you to take her to a mental health professional and start with counselling sessions. They are experts in dealing with such situations. In addition, they can prescribe her medicines to absorb the shock and prevent further hallucinations.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your mother feels better soon!

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
